A book, usually a novel, that is published and printed on demand (POD). The term was originally coined by US printer Lulu in 2002 to describe its Print on Demand service offerings. Lulu has since expanded its term POD to mean the publication of any work by any means; however, the term has stuck within the publishing industry to represent only books printed on demand.
There are many reasons for a publisher or author to choose to use POD as the means of publication. Some include: POD publishers do not include those who publish books as print on demand, those who offer print-on-demand services as an option alongside traditional publishing, and those whose distribution is via print on demand or short run digital printing. The first two could be differentiated as "traditional POD" and "digital POD", respectively. Print on demand is a technology used by publishers and self-publishers to print their books only when an order has been placed for them. In contrast, publishers who opt for POD technology typically print a book or book set each time an order is placed. As a result, fewer books are printed and therefore less ink is used. In addition, the process of printing a Book on Demand typically incurs a much lower cost per number books printed. Depending on the type of print available, this can be as much as half the cost of traditional publishing methods. The high-resolution print supplied by POD publishers can often be read from more than one angle and be displayed without glare or fingerprints from dust and other environmental factors. Most POD publishers offer a free 30-day author evaluation period in which the reader can test the publisher's products, and sometimes receive a discount if a purchase is made. The process is typically done through a form on the Publisher's website, providing the publishers' order number, name and email address. After this period of 30 days, when the book has been viewed by at least one person from that address, it can be permanently published. If you have previously purchased from this publisher before within that same year, they will add your book to their collection for you for free.
